What evolved was one of the most celebrated recordings in Pahinui's career. Gabby (also known as "the Brown Album" due to the brown hues of the album cover) was released in with open arms from the Hawaiian community, and helping him on this project were his sons Bla, Phillip, Cyril, and Martin, along with longtime friends Manuel "Joe Gang" Kupahu and Leland "Atta" Issacs.

It's probably not possible to overstate the importance of this album to Hawaiian music. Coming on the heels of Pahinui's decade with Sons of Hawaii, Gabby sees the slack-key master teaming up with four sons and a cast of stars to produce one of his most captivating releases. Only a singer like Pahinui could make his falsetto sound sweet and simultaneously gruff, and the effervescent.

This set from beloved slack-key guitarist Gabby Pahinui helped fuel that decade’s Hawaiian musical revival, and was the first to feature Pahinui’s sons—James “Bla,” Martin, Philip, and Cyril—who all went on to become powerful performers on their own.
